Not sure that you can tell from this picture, but that "painting" is actually a mosaic from the floor of Emperor Hadrian's place. There's a good effort at one-point perspective and three-dimensionality. The doves, perched upon an urn show movement and life. These are art techniques that were completely lost after the fall of Rome and not re-learned until well into the Renaissance!
