I remember doing a world travel project in Mr. Vahey's 7th grade social studies class and including Australia as one of my stops, so I've wanted to take this trip for a long time.
My sister and I travel together in even years and then she travels with her "husband" (see the link to his blog, the roaming economist) in odd years. I always try to find my own travel buddy for the odd years, it is more fun to travel with a friend, but I haven't had any luck. In '09 when I went to Honduras I invited several people to go, and many said they would, but it ended up just me. It was my first experience vacationing alone. Having been on so many dive trips growing up, I knew a dive vacation was something I could tackle by myself. There's not much to it; you go on 2 boat dives every morning, you relax on the beach in the afternoons, and then repeat. You get paired with the dive master to be your buddy, throw in a night dive or two, and it's a good week.
Once again, this year I am travel-buddy-less. But, I'm not going to skip a vacation just because I can't find someone to travel with. My attitude is, if I wait to find someone to go with I might wait forever. Funny thing is, my attitude shocks people! I've been so excited about this trip that I've been telling everyone who would listen that I'm going. Friends and colleagues alike are just amazed that I'm going half way across the world alone. But like I said, I know how to do dive trips, there's no language barrier, and Australians are really friendly, so I'm going to have a great time. Maybe along the way I'll inspire others to be fearless travelers too!

I know we were planning to go to Croatia next year but I saw a lot of advertisements for Georgia (the country, not the state) while I was in Europe. we should look into that too for next year.
