Stockholm

Our last port stop was a nice surprise. Stockholm was the most beautiful city we experienced and it started with the amazing views of the green covered archipelago we passed on our way into port. I think each city we visited called themselves the "Venice of the North", but Stockholm, with it's cluster of some 30000 islands, skerries was the only one that really lived up to the name.

We only had a few hours in the city, but we managed to pack a lot of fun into that time. There is a lot to do and see here, and this is definitely a city we'd like to come back to see again.

After taking the port bus into town and jumping on the local tram, we wanted to start our visit at the Vasa Museum which houses a large wooden warship that sunk the first time they put it in the water (note - too many cannons make a ship heavy!). But one of the curses of cruising is that everyone else had the same idea and the line to get in was like the line at the Hermatage!

We instead went to the Skansen open air museum. It is a historical village with a blacksmith, glass blower, and lots of animals. Think Colonial Williamsburg for Sweden.

Highlights:
- Walking on wooden stilts
- Eating dried bear meet
- Watching the goat herders "walk" their goats on a leash

Yes, that goat is on a leash!

More Reindeer!

After a few hours at Skansen, we went in different directions. Todd and TB1 went to see this statue which is someone slaying an evil sea monster in the center of the old town square. And then headed to the local palace which is now the seat of the government.

And TB2 and family went to see this statue - a giant lion in a park.

...and passed the opera house.

Stolkholm is another city of rivers similar to St. Petersburg. It was a lovely stop and I'm sure we could have spent several days enjoying the gorgeous weather, sites and the people. We couldn't have asked for a better final port-of-call to end the trip.
