Asheville, NC

Hubby and I always go on a vacation in September to celebrate or anniversary. Last year we tried to go to Belize but got to the airport and discovered Larry's passport was expired. Oops! No snafus this time.

I've wanted to go to see the Biltmore House ever since I learned about it in one the gazillion architecture history classes I took in college. I've suggested to location many times for a trip to anyone who would listen. It only took 20 years to finally make it!

We flew into Charolette and drove the two hours through the Blue Ridge Mountains to get to Asheville. It really is pretty scenery.

Asheville really surprised me though. It's weird! Like Austin or San Francisco weird. It has a very hippy-crunchy granola-liberal bastion- dreadlocks wearing- pot smoking feel to it. Not at all what I expected in the middle of the Bible Belt.

We walked around downtown on Friday night. We went to a darling bar called Top of the Monk that served craft cocktails. There were so good. We ended up going back again on Saturday to try another one. They don't serve food there so per NC law we had to pay a dollar to become a member!

After that we stopped at Dim Som and Tapas place and had a bite and another drink. It was pretty good too. For a city without a commercial airport, it has a pretty happening f&b scene. From there we went to Curate, which TripAdvisor assured us would be delicious. They had an hour and a half wait so we went to another bar in the Aloft Hotel for another craft cocktail while we waited.

Curate did end up being spectacular. It's a true tapas restaurant. We order several small plates and everything melted in our mouths. Even the sangria and watermelon sorbet for desert were excellent.

From there we found a place to dance, like we always try to do. There was another little place called Cork and Keg that had a band playing Appalachian country music with a small dance floor. They played a lot of two steps which was great. The other dancers weren't quite doing the two-step as we know it in Texas, but we held our own.

Tomorrow we go see the Biltmore House!
