The David

There are statues of David everywhere - in the churches, piazzas and gardens. They aren't all "The David", the famous one by Michelangelo, there are also other statues representing the David of "David and Goliath" fame from Donatello and other artist.

David became the unofficial symbol of Florence in the 1400s. In the biblical story he represents triumph of good over evil. In Florence he represents the triumph of Florence over her enemies.

Michelangelo's famous 14 foot high sculpture was originally intended to go on one of the buttresses of the Duomo. That's why when you look at him you notice his hands are huge compared to the rest of his body. He was supposed to be seen from about 20 feet below and at that distance he would have looked proportional. But the statue was so impressive the city decided to put it in the main Piazza where everyone could see it better.

Today, the David is in the Academia Museum and there are copies standing in the Piazza della Signoria, the Piazzale Michelangelo (above) and in every souvenir stand (below).
