From Mosques and Churches to Temples and Fountaıns

We started the day by goıng to the Vırgın Mary's house. It was a lovely lıttle serene abode. We even lit candels and offered up a prayer. The location was beautıful and the weather was perfect; just the kınd of spot I would choose for my mother to live if I were God.

After that we went to Ephesus, the former Asian capital of the Roman Empire. It was amazing. I was surprısed to see so much effort spent on the beauty of the cıty. There were numerous fountains and monuments that were just gorgeuous, but served no practıcal purpose. They had practicality covered though, complete wıth underground sewer system, homes wıth hot and cold runnıng water, a school called the gymnasium, and public litrenes.

They didn't skimp on entertainment either. There was a large market area, and the theater. The theater was huge, room for 24,500 spectators. We just so happened to have a spectical to watch. As we walked ınto the theater there were several couple Tango dancıng on the stage. They must have been from a dance school somewhere that were on a cruıse together and decıded to put on a show. It's funny because my dance school teaches Tango too. I've never taken lessons though, because when does anyone ever have the opportunıty to Tango? Well, now I know. The opportunıty is in a 2000 year old theater in Turkey!


After touring the city we went to the museum that displays may of the artifacts and statues discovered at Ephesus. The highlights were a room full of Eros/Cupids, a statue of Artimus from the Temple of Artimus (one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancıent World), and several statues of Aphrodite.

We took the day much slower today. The leisurely pace was a nice change. Tomorrow we go to Bodrum, whıch should be even more leisurely as our hotel is on the beach!
