Bagan (rhymes with pecan) has temples every where, it's like fountains in Rome. At one point there were around 4000, but now the count is somewhere around 2400. Some were commissioned by kings, and others by important or wealthy people. Building a temple or pagoda was something people did towards the end of their life to get good karma. Now they are everywhere, with villages and roads popping up in between them. This morning I got to ride a hot air balloon over the area. It was magnificent!
