After our adventure in Pollywolly (TB2 is the only one who can properly pronounce or spell the name of that site) we headed south and stopped into one of Sri Lanka's many national parks - Minneriya.
We've had a common experience throughout this trip. Our site-seeing generally starts off a little disappointing, but then, BAM!, we turn a corner and it gets great.
Colombo was ho-hum, but Dambulla was magnificent.
Anapura had us worried we traveled half way around the world for an unimpressive temple, but Mintale was breathtaking.
Today's safari started off slowwwww, but ended with a herd of elephants almost charging our jeep!
After traversing some very bumpy roads in an open air jeep, we came upon this.
The females travel in herds staying close together for safety and all taking care of the babies. The male elephants stay with the herd until they are about 7 years old and then go off on their own. The females stay together with their family of other female elephants and can live into their 70s.
There were two male elephants playing the water near by. They eventually came over to check out the females (who ignored them completely).
As they started to wonder off, one of the female elephants was spooked by the sound of a departing safari jeep and the next thing we know we are facing a wall of elephants - all approaching our jeep. It was a scary and amazing sight.
With some quick driving, we escaped the herd and they re-routed to the lake to go cool off from the afternoon heat.
Talk about ending with a bang!
