The Pilgrims Travel in Swarms

We're here in Sigiria, home of many sacred Buddhist sites, just after a Poyo - a full moon holiday. So there are pilgrims everywhere. Most are dressed in all white. And they travel in swarms. It's been surreal. We get to a site and there will be no one there. Then we'll turn around and it's so crowded with pilgrims we can barely move. Then we turn around again and they've all disappeared. We are learning to time our tours around the swarms, going quickly after one has dispersed and trying to finish our site seeing before engulfed by another.

Luckily, since it's the off-season, all of the non-sacred sites we've had pretty much to ourselves. And it's been amazing!

No pilgrims at Lion's Rock
