Sydney Opera House
A view of the Opera House from inside. This building is 2 buildings in one really. There is the outer shell that is just concrete with tile and then a wooden structure was built inside of it to make up the theaters. It took 3 times as long to build and was 20 times over budget! Earnings from the lotto paid for it. The shape is supposed to remind you of sails, but the iridescent tile is meant to look like shells. The lobby area has glass all around to look like the bridge of a ship. The sails were built of concrete "ribs" that were pre made and then put together on site. According to my tour guide this was the first time that was done. There are parts of the center that are under the sea level. And while it is magnificent from the outside the resident ballet and opera companies apparently complain about how awful back stage is. They've been there for 37 years now, so I guess it's not too bad!
