Shangri-La, not just any hotel

Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the novel Last Horizon as a mystical, harmonious valley. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly utopia. In the novel, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living years beyond the normal lifespan...if I lived at this hotel I think I would live forever too!

The awe started at the airport when the attendant, dressed in traditional Thai silk, escorted us to the car and gave us cool wash cloths for our face and hands. When we arrived at the hotel (at 1 am) we were greeted by name at the entrance with an aromatic floral offering, a bang of the gong and led to our room. The check in procedures were quickly completed in our room, no standing around at a front desk here, and ended with our butler, Eric, telling us he was at our beck and call. To begin our stay he brought us refreshing sweet tea and exotic fruit to enjoy.

The room comes with complementary everything, including a pair of scissors which came in handy while unwrapping some of our treasure we purchased!

Yesterday, we called our friendly butler and asked him to bring us a computer for our room which he did. So we've had unlimited internet access, yipee! We also needed his help in shipping a parcel back to the states (I was so sure it would fit in the suitcase when I bought it at the market!). Once we were able to translate what we needed he arranged for that too.

This is the most luxury either of us have ever experienced, all for less than what you would pay for an average hotel room in New York City. We don't usually splurge like this, but our hotel in Cambodia is insanely cheap we decided to upgrade a little while in Bangkok.

It's going to be tough to leave our little Shangri-la utopia.
