You can't take the MBA out of the girl
This morning when we bought our temple pass I enjoyed seeing how this country, that had been socialist for some time, has embraced capitalism. We were each charged $40 for our 3 day pass. That doesn't sound like much, but in comparison to what we paid in Bangkok to see the temples, it is rather expensive. In fact, the prices of all things that are geared towards the tourists are much more expensive than the Thai equivalent (with the exception of our hotel room which is an eight of the price, must be the lack of a butler!). Siem Reap doesn't have the industry or other development that Bangkok has. The city only has tourism, and the tourist are predominately westerners. The prices have been set accordingly. Another decade of this and Siem Reap will be featured in Conde Nast's Traveler as the next undiscovered hot spot. I'm so glad we beat the crowds!
